Adramyttion

Adramyttion was an ancient settlement in northwestern Asia Minor, believed to underlie much of modern Edremit in Turkey's Balıkesir province. The city appears in Greek and Roman sources — Strabo described it as a notable trading hub on the Adramyttian Gulf, today's Gulf of Edremit — and passed through Persian, Greek, Macedonian, and Roman hands over the centuries. Little remains visible above ground today; the ancient city has effectively been absorbed beneath its modern successor, making systematic excavation difficult. For visitors, Adramyttion is a historical concept rather than a physical site, best explored through the lens of Aegean antiquity and the region's layered past.
