Aigai

Aigai — known in Turkish as Nemrutkale, meaning "Nemrut's Castle" — is an ancient Aeolian city perched on the wooded Gün Dağı ridge in Manisa province, roughly 35 kilometers south of Pergamon. During the Hellenistic and Roman periods the city operated as a functioning urban center with a theater, agora, and colonnaded halls, the remains of which are scattered across the hillside. Though Aigai never rivaled the scale of nearby Pergamon, it held membership in the Aeolian League and contributed to the cultural fabric of western Anatolia for centuries. Today the site receives few organized visitors; those willing to make the ascent find crumbling stonework set against quiet maquis scrubland and sweeping views across the Anatolian hill country — a destination for archaeology enthusiasts and hikers seeking ruins well off the mainstream circuit.
