Aegidien Church

The Aegidienkirche is a 14th-century Gothic ruin in Hanover's Altstadt, dedicated to Saint Aegidius, one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. It was the easternmost of the old town's three medieval churches until an Allied bombing raid in October 1943 gutted it completely — and it was never rebuilt. Left deliberately unrestored, the roofless shell with its weathered sandstone piers and intact window arches serves as a permanent memorial to victims of war and violence. Every year on Hiroshima Day, August 6th, the ruin hosts a civic remembrance ceremony linking local wartime loss to the global anti-nuclear peace movement. The site is wheelchair-accessible and open as a contemplative public space.
