Barrier Peak
National ParkSummitGeology+1
Agassiz Peak rises to 3,766 m (12,356 ft) as the second-highest summit in Arizona, part of the San Francisco Peaks volcanic massif in the Coconino National Forest just north of Flagstaff. The San Francisco Peaks are considered sacred by more than a dozen Native American nations, including the Navajo and Hopi, and have been at the center of long-running legal disputes over ski area development on their slopes. The upper elevations support rare subalpine and tundra vegetation, including plant species found nowhere else on Earth. Hikers typically approach via the Humphreys Peak Trail, gaining expansive views across the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, and the broad sweep of the Colorado Plateau.
