Agilkia island

Agilkia is a small inland island in the reservoir of the old Aswan Dam, roughly 12 km south of Aswan, and has been home to the fully relocated Philae temple complex since the early 1980s. The original temples stood on the neighboring island of Philae, which was permanently submerged after the completion of the Aswan High Dam in 1970. In one of the most ambitious archaeological salvage operations in history, UNESCO oversaw the dismantling and reconstruction of every temple structure — stone by stone — on the higher ground of Agilkia between 1977 and 1980, using techniques first developed at Abu Simbel. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 as part of the Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae. Accessible only by boat, the temples dedicated to Isis, Horus, and Hathor retain the full weight of pharaonic sacred architecture despite their modern relocation.
