Acropolis Palaiokastro

The Acropolis Palaiokastro is the ancient fortress citadel of Methana, a volcanic peninsula southwest of Piraeus, sitting roughly one kilometer below the village of Megalochori. Its origins reach back to the Mycenaean period, making it one of the oldest fortified sites in the broader Argolis region; the walls were later expanded in classical antiquity using large unworked stone blocks characteristic of Cyclopean masonry. The site remains largely unexcavated and unmanaged — no entry fee, no signage — offering a rare, unhurried encounter with Bronze Age and classical Greek layers of habitation, with views stretching across the Saronic Gulf.
