Amelungsburg

The Amelungsburg is an early historical hill fort located on the Amelungsberg ridge in the Süntel range, a low mountain chain southwest of Hannover in Lower Saxony. The earthwork ramparts date to around 300 CE, placing the site in the Migration Period, when such elevated enclosures served as defensive refuges across northern Germany. The entire area now falls within the Hohenstein nature reserve, administered by the municipality of Hessisch Oldendorf in the Hameln-Pyrmont district. Visible earthen ramparts survive beneath dense woodland cover; the site is reachable via hiking trails through the Süntel and appeals primarily to those combining an interest in early medieval archaeology with a walk through a protected forest landscape.
