Al-Hirah

Al-Hira was the capital of the Lakhmid Arab kingdom, situated along the lower Euphrates just south of present-day Najaf. Flourishing in late antiquity as a buffer state between Sassanid Persia and the Arabian Peninsula, it served as a significant center of trade and pre-Islamic Arab culture. In 602 CE it fell to the Sassanid king Khosrow II, and barely three decades later, in 633 CE, the early Islamic commander Khalid ibn al-Walid captured it during the Arab conquests — one of the first major cities to fall in Mesopotamia. The city remained inhabited until the 10th century before fading into obscurity. Little stands above ground today, making it primarily a site of archaeological and historical significance rather than a conventional visitor attraction.
