Aghmat

Aghmat, now known as Joumâa Aghmat, was a major Berber trading city in the southern foothills of the High Atlas, roughly 35 kilometers southeast of Marrakesh. In the 11th century it served as the first capital of the Almoravid dynasty before Yusuf ibn Tashfin founded Marrakesh and the city gradually fell into obscurity. Archaeological excavations have revealed street grids, water channels, and building foundations that attest to a once-thriving urban settlement almost entirely absent from popular memory. The site rewards visitors with an interest in early Islamic Berber urbanism and pre-Marrakesh Moroccan history.
