Al-Rashid Street

Al-Rashid Street is one of two main arteries running the length of the Gaza Strip, tracing the Mediterranean coastline for approximately 45 kilometres from the northern border crossing with Israel to just short of the Egyptian border in the south — never straying more than two kilometres from the sea. It is named after Hārūn al-Rashīd, the Abbasid caliph whose reign around 800 CE marked a high point of the Islamic Golden Age and whose legendary figure appears throughout One Thousand and One Nights. Running parallel to the inland Saladin Street, it forms one half of Gaza's primary road infrastructure and offers coastal views across the Mediterranean for much of its length.
