Anemurium

Anemurium — modern Turkish Eski Anamur — is one of the best-preserved ancient ruined cities on Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast, occupying a rocky promontory in the region once known as Rough Cilicia, today's Mersin province. The city flourished under Roman rule before being permanently abandoned in the 7th century CE following repeated Arab raids. Surviving structures include extensive necropoleis with hundreds of rock-cut tomb chambers, bathhouses, an odeon, and city walls still standing several metres high in places. Cape Anemurium marks the southernmost point of the Anatolian mainland, and on clear days the coast of Cyprus is visible across roughly 65 kilometres of open sea. The site draws few crowds, rewarding visitors with unhurried exploration along rough paths through maquis scrub and ruins set directly above the water.
