Popeye Village

Also known as: Popeye Village Fun Park, Sweethaven Village

Liked by

Popeye Village — officially Sweethaven Village — is a cluster of ramshackle, brightly painted timber huts perched on Malta's rocky northwest coastline. Director Robert Altman had the entire set constructed from scratch in 1979 for the live-action musical Popeye, starring Robin Williams, choosing Malta because its remote coves could convincingly double as a rough-hewn fishing village. After filming wrapped, the set was never dismantled and gradually converted into a leisure park. Visitors today can wander the deliberately crooked alleyways right on the Mediterranean shore, take boat trips around the bay, and swim from a small beach below the huts. It remains one of the more unusual film-heritage sites in Europe — equal parts theme park, open-air movie museum, and coastal curiosity.
