Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument in the Texas Panhandle preserves one of the most significant prehistoric resource sites in North America: quarry pits dug into the hills above the Canadian River where Indigenous peoples extracted flint for more than 13,000 years. The agatized dolomite flint — distinctive for its swirling reds, pinks, and purples — was traded across much of the continent, with Alibates points turning up at archaeological sites from Canada to Mexico. Access is strictly limited to ranger-led tours, keeping visitor numbers deliberately low. The two-hour guided hikes traverse unpaved terrain to the ancient quarry pits, offering a rare, unhurried look at the economic networks of early Great Plains cultures.
