Almberg (1,142 m) rises in the Bavarian Forest along the Elbe-Danube watershed, some 20 kilometres northeast of Freyung near the Czech border. The Mitterfirmiansreut ski area on its eastern slopes runs five surface lifts, a chairlift, and an extensive cross-country trail network, making it one of the more reliably snow-covered spots in Lower Bavaria. A 1,907-metre zip-line, opened in May 2026, adds a summer draw to the mountain. What truly sets Almberg apart is its annual telescope meet, where amateur astronomers gather to take advantage of the low light pollution above this sparsely inhabited border region — an unusual pairing with a ski resort.
