Altes Lager

The Altes Lager nature monument sits roughly 1.5 km south of Menzlin along the Peene river and represents one of the rare archaeological traces of a joint Viking and Slavic settlement on modern German soil. During the early medieval period, Norse traders and Slavic Lutizi — specifically the Tollenser tribe — co-inhabited a trading post here whose original name has been lost to history. Finds from the site point to active commerce along routes linking the Baltic Sea to the Slavic hinterland. Protected as a Bodendenkmal (subsurface heritage monument) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the site today offers no standing structures or reconstructions — just open floodplain landscape concealing a forgotten meeting point of two medieval worlds.
