The Alte Burg is an early medieval ringwall located between the hamlets of Altenstein and Lichtenstein, in the market town of Maroldsweisach in the Haßberge district of Lower Franconia — not in Bamberg city proper, despite the slug. Protected as a listed cultural monument, the earthwork is a typical example of Frankish ring fortifications: a raised earthen circuit that likely served as a refuge or small lordly seat before being swallowed by forest over the centuries. Visitors following forest paths will recognize the overgrown ramparts only up close, making it a quiet site of interest primarily for those with a taste for early medieval archaeology.
