Old Grodno Castle

The Old Grodno Castle is a hilltop fortification overlooking the Niemen River and stands as one of the most architecturally layered medieval monuments in Belarus. Founded in the 15th century during the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the structure accumulated Gothic, Baroque, Mannerist and Classicist elements across successive rebuilds — a rare visual record of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's shifting political and cultural influence in the region. The castle served as a royal residence and hosted several sessions of the Polish-Lithuanian Sejm before wars and political upheaval diminished its central role. Today it functions as a regional museum displaying artifacts spanning from the Stone Age to the modern era. The castle hill affords an open view across Hrodna's old town and the wide bend of the Niemen below.
