Gnandstein Castle

Burg Gnandstein rises above the Wyhra river valley south of Leipzig and is regarded as Saxony's best-preserved Romanesque fortified castle. Built in the early 13th century as a seat of ministeriales serving the Wettiner dynasty, it passed to the noble Einsiedel family and remained in their hands for over 500 years — an unusual dynastic continuity that accounts for the castle's remarkably intact fabric. The standout feature is the late-Gothic chapel in the north wing, completed at the end of the 15th century and still fully preserved. Today the castle is a protected cultural monument with a permanent exhibition on its history. Visitors can walk the courtyard, palas, and chapel, with views over the gentle hills of the Kohrener Land region.
