Historic playhouse on Düsseldorf's Marktplatz, housed in the foundry of Baroque sculptor Grupello.

The Altes Theater on Marktplatz was a playhouse in the heart of Düsseldorf's old town, operating from 1747 until the early 1870s. It occupied the former foundry of Baroque sculptor Gabriel Grupello, where the famous Jan Wellem equestrian statue had been cast — a legacy still reflected in its alternative name, the "Grupellotheater." The building was abandoned after a new city theatre opened on today's Heinrich-Heine-Allee in 1875, and the original structure no longer survives.
