Aussichtspunkt Tagebau Garzweiler

This RWE-operated viewpoint on the edge of the Garzweiler lignite open-cast mine sits in the Rhenish mining district southwest of Düsseldorf, offering an unobstructed view into one of Europe's largest active excavations. The pit stretches over 40 kilometres and reaches depths of nearly 200 metres; the bucket-wheel excavators working the floor are among the largest land vehicles ever built, their true scale only apparent when you spot the cars parked beside them. What gives the landscape its surreal, unsettling quality is the human cost behind it: more than a dozen villages were demolished and their residents forcibly resettled to make way for the mine — Immerath, Otzenrath and others exist now only in archive photographs. Information boards explain the extraction technology, and flat paved paths around the site are popular with cyclists. The gates are locked at night; daytime access is free.
