Cranger Kirmes

Cranger Kirmes is the largest folk festival in North Rhine-Westphalia, held each year for roughly eleven days in early August on the fairground beside the Rhein-Herne-Kanal in the Herne district of Crange. With an average of four million visitors annually — a record 4.7 million were counted by police in 2008 — it ranks among Germany's biggest public fairs. Its roots trace back to a medieval horse market first documented in 1303, which gradually evolved over centuries into the sprawling funfair it is today. Visitors can choose from dozens of rides ranging from traditional carousels to high-speed roller coasters, alongside a dense strip of food stalls, carnival games, and beer gardens with a distinctly Ruhrgebiet character. Each edition closes with a large fireworks display over the canal.
