Amaya

The hill of Amaya in Burgos province is an archaeological site occupied continuously from antiquity through the Middle Ages. In late antiquity the flat-topped mesa served as a significant fortified position — the Visigoths used it as a strategic stronghold in the region before it gradually lost its military relevance amid the Islamic expansion and the Reconquista. Above-ground remains are sparse, but excavations have revealed settlement layers spanning several distinct eras. The climb to the summit plateau is rewarded by sweeping views over the Castilian meseta, giving an immediate sense of why this remote hilltop was so strategically prized for over a thousand years.
