Castro of Monte Mozinho

The Castro of Monte Mozinho, locally nicknamed Cidade Morta de Penafiel (the Dead City of Penafiel), is one of the largest iron-age and Roman-period hillforts in northwest Portugal's Castro culture tradition, and is a protected national monument. The settlement was continuously occupied from the Iron Age through the height of Roman influence in the 1st to 4th centuries AD, featuring stone-built houses, paved lanes and a structured urban layout across the hilltop. Excavations have uncovered hundreds of building foundations, street grids and everyday artefacts, giving a rare picture of dense prehistoric community life. The site operates today as an open-air archaeological park — entry requires a fee — with marked paths through the exposed ruins and wide views across the rolling landscape east of Porto.
