Altenburg

The Altenburg — locally known as the 'Grüne Platte' or Green Plateau — is a prehistoric hillfort and raised settlement on a forested basalt hill within the Naturpark Habichtswald, northeast of Niedenstein in Schwalm-Eder district. Its earthwork ramparts are among the most significant Celtic Iron Age enclosures in northern Hesse, and the site is protected as a cultural monument. The earthen walls remain clearly visible as landscape features within the woodland. Hikers reach the summit via marked trails from the Habichtswald uplands, where the plateau opens up to wide views across the northern Hessian hill country.
