Amendolea

The Amendolea is a fast-flowing river in the province of Reggio Calabria, rising near Montalto in the Aspromonte National Park and cutting south through narrow rock gorges before emptying into the Ionian Sea west of Bova Marina. Its drainage basin covers roughly 150 square kilometres of rugged Calabrian terrain. Along its course lie the near-abandoned ghost villages of Roghudi and Ghorio di Roghudi, evacuated in the 1970s after repeated flood damage. The river gorge attracts hikers drawn to its remoteness and the rough trail network through the Aspromonte hinterland.
