Trümmelbachfälle

The Trümmelbachfälle in the Lauterbrunnen valley are the only glacial waterfalls in Europe accessible from inside a mountain. Over millennia, meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau has carved ten successive cascades through tight rock tunnels, reaching peak flows of up to 20,000 litres per second. A tunnel lift installed in the 1970s carries visitors to the upper falls, where narrow, spray-soaked passages bring you within arm's reach of the torrent — the roar inside the rock is as much felt as heard. The site sits at the head of the valley between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg, open April through November (peak hours 08:30–18:00); an entrance fee applies and steep, slippery paths make it unsuitable for wheelchair users.
