Ancient Roman City of Pelusium

Pelusium was one of ancient Egypt's most strategically vital frontier cities, positioned at the easternmost branch of the Nile Delta roughly 30 km southeast of modern Port Said. Its Greek name, derived from the word for mud, reflects the marshy terrain that both defended and defined the site. The city guarded the main overland corridor between Egypt and the Levant, making it the site of pivotal conflicts — most famously the Battle of Pelusium in 525 BC, where the Persian king Cambyses II defeated the Egyptians and opened his path to pharaonic rule. Later flourishing under the Ptolemies and Romans, the city eventually fell into abandonment and was swallowed by shifting sands. Today scattered ruins and ongoing archaeological excavations mark the site, offering a fragmentary but evocative glimpse into a once-vital crossroads of the ancient world.
