Anundshög

Anundshög, outside Västerås, is the largest and most typologically diverse Viking-Age burial ground in Sweden, encompassing burial mounds, ship settings, stone arrangements, and a runestone within a single, sweeping site. It is traditionally associated with King Anund, said to be interred here, lending the site its name. The ship settings — outlines of vessels laid in stone as grave markers — reflect the centrality of seafaring in Norse beliefs about the afterlife, making Anundshög as much a window into ritual thought as into burial practice. The site sits in open countryside and is freely accessible year-round. Visitors can wander the scattered monuments independently, with the runestone and the largest burial mound as natural focal points — an atmosphere of quiet that feels strikingly at odds with the site's outsized archaeological importance.
