Apollo sanctuary

The Apollo sanctuary near Kalapodi in central Greece is identified by current scholarship with ancient Abai, a significant cult site and oracle centre of Apollo mentioned in multiple ancient sources. Herodotus records that the Persians burned the sanctuary during their march through Greece in 480 BC — one of several documented destructions. Systematic excavations since the 1970s have revealed continuous ritual activity from the Late Mycenaean period through Roman times, giving the site exceptional archaeological depth. Visible remains today consist mainly of foundation walls and excavation trenches, with little visitor infrastructure on site.
