Temple of Amun, Jebel Barkal

The Temple of Amun at the foot of Jebel Barkal is the largest and most important ancient Egyptian-style monument in Nubia and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing the archaeological sites of the Meroe region in modern Sudan. It began as a modest chapel during the Egyptian New Kingdom — likely under Thutmose III in the 15th century BCE — before Kushite kings expanded it into the religious capital of Nubia between 750 and 300 BCE. They called it the "Karnak of Napata," and like its Theban counterpart, its Amun oracle legitimized royal succession across the Nile Valley. The flat-topped mountain Jebel Barkal — revered as the dwelling-place of Amun himself — towers directly behind the ruins, giving the site a dramatic natural backdrop. Today visitors walk among pylon fragments, column stumps, and hieroglyphic inscriptions that attest to one of Africa's most sophisticated ancient civilizations.
