The sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas sits on the hillside of Mount Kynortion in the Argolid region, close to the famous Asklepion of Epidauros. Apollo was worshipped here under the epithet Maleatas, likely derived from Cape Maleas — and scholars such as J.W. Riethmüller have argued that Maleatas was originally an independent pre-Olympian deity of the Peloponnese, only later absorbed into the Apollo cult.
