Arbore Church

The monastery church at Arbore, in Romania's Suceava County, is one of the finest examples of the Moldavian painted-church tradition and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993 alongside several other churches of northern Moldavia. Dedicated to the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, it was built at the end of the 15th century, and its exterior walls are covered in vivid frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Baptist in earthy reds, blues, and greens that have survived centuries of exposure with remarkable clarity. The durability of the pigments — still puzzling conservators today — is partly attributed to a lime-based technique specific to this region. Visitors arrive at a quiet rural monastery where the sacred program unfolds not inside but on the outer stone face of the building itself, a distinctly Eastern approach to devotional art that sets these Moldavian churches apart from virtually any church tradition in Western Europe.
