Ardee Castle

Ardee Castle is a 15th-century tower house on Castle Street in Ardee, County Louth, recognized as the largest medieval tower house in the British Isles. Its origins trace back to 1207, when Norman settler Roger de Peppard first fortified the site, though little of that early structure survives. The present building has had a remarkably long active life: it served as a prison during the 17th and 18th centuries, then as a district courthouse until June 2006. Designated a National Monument, it stands today as one of the most layered examples of medieval Irish architecture — a structure that moved from military stronghold to instrument of law over eight centuries.
