Aberdour Castle

Aberdour Castle stands in the historic village of Easter Aberdour in Fife and is considered one of the oldest dateable surviving castles in Scotland, with its core tower dating to around 1200 — contemporary with Castle Sween on Scotland's west coast. For centuries it served as a stronghold of the Douglas Earls of Morton, who expanded it incrementally across the medieval and early modern periods. In 1987, the adjoining terraced garden was formally recognised in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, marking it as one of the country's historically significant designed landscapes. Managed today by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled ancient monument, it drew around 25,000 visitors in 2019. Opening hours are seasonal: April to September daily 9:30–17:30, October to March Saturday to Wednesday 10:00–16:00. The walled garden and roofless tower sections give the site a relaxed, exploratory atmosphere distinct from busier Highland castle destinations.
