This memorial in Murcia commemorates Hasdrubal the Fair, a Carthaginian general and son-in-law of Hamilcar Barca who commanded Punic forces on the Iberian Peninsula from around 229 BC. He founded the city of Qart Hadasht — modern-day Cartagena — as a key military and trading base, cementing Carthaginian power in Hispania before the Second Punic War. Hasdrubal was assassinated in 221 BC, paving the way for Hannibal's command. The memorial offers a quiet nod to the ancient Punic layer of the region's history, rarely visible in the present-day urban fabric.
