Ashdod-Yam Citadel

The Ashdod-Yam Citadel, known in medieval sources as Chastel Béroard, is a 10th-century Arab fortress that survives today as a ruin. Built under early Islamic rule, the structure later fell within the orbit of the Crusader states, who gave it its Frankish name. The surviving walls offer one of the few tangible remnants of early Islamic coastal fortification architecture in the region. Today the site sits within an ecological park, its weathered stonework half-reclaimed by coastal vegetation — a rarely visited fragment of layered medieval history.
