秋田城跡

The Akita Castle ruins, known in Japanese as 秋田城跡, date to 733 CE when the imperial Nara government established fortified outposts across northern Honshu to consolidate control over the Emishi people at the frontier of the Yamato state. The site functioned as both a military garrison and an administrative center — one of the northernmost reaches of early Japanese imperial authority. It should not be confused with Kubota Castle, a separate and later fortification also located within modern Akita city. Today the remains are set within a park, with archaeological excavations having uncovered sections of the original palisade and government buildings, some of which have been partially reconstructed for visitors.
