Vecdole Castle

The ruins of Vecdole Castle occupy the island of Dole on the eastern bank of the Daugava river, roughly 20 kilometres upstream from Riga. The fortification was built in the early 13th century, during the period of Livonian crusading when the Teutonic Order and the Bishopric of Riga established a chain of strongholds along the river's banks. The castle's later history is poorly documented — the circumstances of its abandonment or destruction remain unclear. Only scattered wall remnants survive today, half-absorbed by the island's overgrown riverside landscape. The site's isolation on Dole gives it a quietly atmospheric character, with wide views across the Daugava far from Riga's urban centre.
