Asirgarh Fort

Asirgarh Fort crowns a basalt ridge of the Satpura Range in Madhya Pradesh, commanding the principal overland corridor between the Gangetic plain and the Deccan plateau. In 1601 the fort fell to Mughal emperor Akbar after a prolonged siege — according to local accounts, through treachery rather than direct assault — making it a pivotal point in Mughal expansion into central India. The sprawling complex includes crumbling bastions, overgrown courtyards, and the remains of a Shiva temple. From the uppermost ramparts, the view stretches across the Tapti valley, and the fort's relative remoteness keeps it largely free of crowds, lending the ruins an atmosphere of genuine abandonment.
