Aston Expressway

The Aston Expressway (officially the A38(M)) is a 2-mile urban motorway in Birmingham, opened on 24 May 1972 alongside the then-final section of the M6. Its most distinctive engineering feature is a seven-lane undivided carriageway whose lane directions are managed by overhead dynamic signals, allowing the flow to be reversed in response to peak-hour traffic — an unusual design for its era. Beyond this traffic-engineering curiosity, it functions purely as commuter infrastructure with no cultural or visitor significance.
