Birmingham New Street is the city's main railway station and the busiest intercity station in the United Kingdom outside London, handling over 35 million passengers a year. The original Victorian structure was demolished in the 1960s and replaced with a utilitarian concrete box; a major regeneration completed around 2015 added the Grand Central shopping centre above the platforms, topped by a sweeping steel-and-glass atrium. Sitting on the West Coast Main Line, it offers direct services to London Euston, Manchester, and Edinburgh. It functions primarily as a national rail interchange rather than a destination in its own right, though the surrounding city centre is a short walk away.
