Atlantic Ocean Road

The Atlantic Ocean Road (Atlanterhavsveien) is an 8.3-kilometre stretch of National Route 64 in Møre og Romsdal county, threading between Molde and Kristiansund across a raw Atlantic archipelago via eight low-slung bridges. Opened in 1989 after years of construction battered by fierce weather, the road sits so close to sea level that autumn storms send waves crashing directly over the tarmac — a spectacle that draws photographers from across Norway. In 2010 it was listed as a protected cultural monument, recognized as a feat of Norwegian civil engineering. Pullouts along the route offer fishing spots, short walks across the skerries, and unobstructed views over the jagged western coastline.
