Tour de Capitello

The Tour de Capitello is a medieval Genoese watchtower standing on the Corsican coastline in the commune of Grosseto-Prugna, just south of Ajaccio near Porticcio beach. The Republic of Genoa constructed a network of such circular towers along the Corsican coast between the 15th and 17th centuries, designed as an early-warning system against raids by North African pirates — sentinels would relay smoke or fire signals between towers, alerting the entire island in a matter of hours. Listed today as a protected historic monument, the tower commands sweeping views across the Gulf of Ajaccio and the open Mediterranean, a quiet relic of a centuries-old coastal defense system that predates any modern infrastructure by half a millennium.
