Atomium

Brussels' iconic 1958 World's Fair landmark: a 102-metre steel sculpture of an iron crystal cell, with a museum and panoramic viewing sphere.

The Atomium is Brussels' most recognisable landmark, built as the centrepiece of the 1958 World's Fair. Engineer André Waterkeyn's design represents an iron crystal unit cell magnified 165 billion times: nine spheres connected by tubes, rising 102 metres. Originally conceived as a temporary structure, it is now a protected monument. Visitors can enter the spheres, which house exhibition spaces, a children's area, and a restaurant with panoramic views across the city. It stands in the Laeken district near the Royal Greenhouses and the Atomium Park.
