Augustenborg Slot

Augustenborg Slot is a Baroque ducal palace built in 1664, which gave its name to the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg line of the House of Oldenburg. The ducal family occupied the estate until 1848, when the Schleswig-Holstein uprising forced them to abandon it. What followed was an unusually layered institutional afterlife: the building served as a military barracks, then from 1932 until 2015 as a psychiatric hospital. That long and varied history of repurposing lends the palace a character distinct from conventional royal residences. The surrounding baroque park grounds survive and the complex is listed under heritage protection.
