Dikasterialgebäude

The Dikasterialgebäude in Ehrenbreitstein, today a district of Koblenz, is one of the few surviving ancillary structures of Schloss Philippsburg, which served as the residence of the Prince-Electors and Archbishops of Trier from 1632 to 1786. Philippsburg itself was considered one of the most significant Baroque complexes along the Rhine, but in 1801 French troops demolished the nearby Fortress Ehrenbreitstein, leaving the palace so badly damaged it had to be torn down entirely. The Dikasterialgebäude — its name derived from the Greek word for court of justice — survived as a protected Baroque monument and offers a rare material trace of the Electoral Trier's administrative apparatus. It stands as an understated remnant of a lost architectural ensemble.
