Paris-Austerlitz Station

Gare d'Austerlitz is one of Paris's six major terminus stations, situated in the 13th arrondissement on the Left Bank of the Seine near the Jardin des Plantes. Opened in 1840 during the railway boom of the July Monarchy, it served as the main departure point for southwestern France, Spain, and Portugal — a role that shaped the character of the surrounding quartier for generations. The station's wide iron-and-glass train shed is a listed historic monument, representative of mid-19th-century railway architecture in France. Today it handles Transilien commuter trains and long-distance services to the southwest, as well as a handful of overnight routes. Quieter and less touristy than the Gare du Nord or Gare de Lyon, it retains a workaday atmosphere that feels more local than landmark.
