Avaris

Avaris — ancient Egyptian Hut-waret — served as the capital of the Hyksos, a West Semitic people who ruled Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period (c. 1650–1550 BCE). The city occupied a strategic position in the eastern Nile Delta and now lies buried beneath the mounded terrain of Tell el-Dabʿa, near modern Ismailia. Austrian excavations led by Manfred Bietak since the 1960s have uncovered a densely occupied trading metropolis whose finds — including Minoan-style frescoes and imported pottery — point to wide Mediterranean connections that rewrote assumptions about Bronze Age contact networks. Little is visible above ground, making this a site primarily for those with a serious interest in Egyptology and Bronze Age archaeology.
