Antaeopolis

Qau el-Kebir, known in antiquity as Tjebu and by the Greeks as Antaeopolis, served as the capital of the 10th nome of Upper Egypt on the Nile's east bank, roughly 45 km south of Asyut. The site's necropolis spans nearly every period of ancient Egyptian history, but its reputation rests primarily on the elaborately carved rock-cut tombs of the Middle Kingdom nomarchs — regional rulers who wielded considerable autonomous power during that era. Early 20th-century excavations by British and German Egyptologists uncovered richly decorated burial chambers with hieroglyphic inscriptions and funerary goods. Today Antaeopolis is a quiet, seldom-visited ruin that offers specialists and curious travelers a rare window into provincial elite funerary culture far from the grand temple complexes of Luxor or Karnak.
