Avebury Stone Circle

Avebury Stone Circle in Wiltshire is the largest Neolithic henge monument in the British Isles by area — an outer ring nearly 330 metres across, enclosing two smaller inner circles, all formed from unworked sarsen sandstone megaliths. Constructed between roughly 2850 and 2200 BC, the complex almost certainly served ceremonial purposes, though its precise ritual function remains unresolved. What makes Avebury distinctly uncanny is that the medieval village of Avebury — pub, church, and farmhouses included — was built directly inside the monument, leaving standing stones in back gardens and beside country lanes. Part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage listing since 1986, the site is freely walkable among the stones themselves, an intimacy Stonehenge no longer permits. It remains an active spiritual site, regularly visited by Wiccan practitioners and modern pagans, particularly around the solstices.
